Think your pet may be overweight?
Overweight pets are at risk from a wide range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease, skin complaints, breathing difficulties and arthritis. Weight gain can also indicate illness or disease. For this reason, it is important your pet has had a recent check up with a vet, before starting on any weight loss program. Whether your pet has special dietary needs or simply needs to shed a few pounds, our nutritional counselling services can help keep your pet in good health. During your pet’s comprehensive physical examination we evaluate his or her body condition and give recommendations.
We have trained veterinary staff available to help you with nutritional challenges for your pet. For most pets, our recommendations will include information on proper serving size and other feeding strategies to maintain optimal body weight and nutritional health. We will also help you make the most informed choice in the food you feed your pet.
What is the Weight Loss Program?
It is a FREE service at our clinic, where one of our experienced veterinary staff will prepare a weight management program specifically designed for your pet. They will outline target weight goals and also supply you with a Petfit fitness planner which includes a progress tracker, a nutritional plan and an exercise program. The program and your pet’s targets will be based on their age, breed, health and individual needs. You and your pet will also be asked to visit us regularly for free follow-up visits including weight check-ups to make sure your pet is on track and to discuss any concerns or answer any questions you may have.
As a member of our Weight Loss Program, you will be given a username and password to gain access to our free online PetFit program which incorporates:
- an interactive online progress tracker
- reward gifts for reaching weight milestones
- entry into the national Pet Slimmer of the Year competition
- a place to keep your before and after photos
- as well as an array of fun games and exercise ideas
Prescription Diets
Some pets have more serious nutritional challenges or chronic conditions that can benefit from a special diet. If we identify an issue in your pet, we will offer advice and provide information about diets that benefit specific medical conditions such as liver disease, bladder and kidney stones, renal failure, food allergies, diabetes and other conditions.
We carry a full line of prescription foods. If your pet requires a prescription diet we do not carry, we may be able to order it for you.
