A large percentage of modern day pets are becoming couch potatoes. Pet obesity in Australia is reaching epidemic proportions with 41% of dogs and 33% of cats now being classed as overweight.
So why is this happening?
In simple terms, most pets are just eating too many calories for their physical activity levels. For our household pets, there is no need for scavenging and hunting for food and chasing away predators. They even are playing less – especially in single pet households! Our pets are living a more sedentary, pampered lifestyle with an endless supply of food and less opportunities for exercise.
So how can I help my pet?
The first step is to visit your local veterinary surgery for a complimentary Body Fitness Scan where qualified veterinary nurses will assess your pet’s current body condition. They can give you great advice on nutrition and diet modification and also provide you with helpful tips on how to introduce or increase exercise. Even small changes can make a big difference to your pet’s physical and mental well being.
The Rochedale Vet Surgery team are passionate about getting the health and fitness of your pet and getting them off the couch. If you would like to join them check out our other information relating to health and fitness and exercising with your cat and dog for ideas on how to get started.
